Roland Petit's Notre Dame de Paris interpretation
Based on the iconic novel by author Victor Hugo, Roland Petit's little-performed, sensational adaptation of Notre Dame de Paris is a ballet well worth witnessing. With gorgeous costumes designed by none other than Yves Saint Laurent, Maurice Jarre's sumptuous score underpins this journey to medieval France.
A cross-discipline performance of dance and theatre sets the scene for this glorious gothic tale of the cathedral bell-ringer Quasimodo, a hunchback who works amidst Paris spire's in the late 1400s. The deformed protagonist holds a candle for the enchanting Roma dancer Esmerelda, but is unaware that two other men vie for her affections - the fearsome archdeacon Claude Frollo and lothario Captain Phoebus. Their interactions prove fraught, and Quasimodo does all in his power to protect his love.
